When it comes to visual perception in dogs, a common misconception is that they are colorblind and can only see in black, white, and shades of gray. However, scientific research has debunked this idea, revealing that dogs can indeed see colors, albeit not as vividly as humans, with a more limited spectrum.

Differences in Visual Structure between Humans and Dogs:
Both humans and dogs possess specialized light-sensitive cells, known as cone cells, responsible for color vision. The ability to see colors depends not only on the number of cones but also on the variety of cone types, each responsive to different wavelengths of light. Humans have three types of cone cells, corresponding to red, green, and blue, providing a comprehensive color perception. Dogs, on the other hand, only have two types of cone cells, resulting in a less diverse visual experience compared to humans. This similarity in color vision between colorblind humans and dogs is due to both having only two types of cone cells.

Color Vision Experiment with Dogs:
Jay Neitz, a researcher at the University of California, Santa Barbara, conducted an experiment to study dogs' color vision. In the experiment, dogs were presented with three color panels, two of which had the same color, and one was different. The dogs' task was to identify the panel with the distinct color, and successful identification was rewarded. Through repeated trials, the experiment not only confirmed that dogs can see colors but also indirectly demonstrated their inability to perceive certain colors.

Colors Visible to Dogs:
Dogs perceive the world with a color spectrum different from humans. Instead of seeing the traditional rainbow hues, dogs view colors as deep blue, light blue, gray, light yellow, dark yellow (resembling brown), and very dark gray. In their visual world, the primary colors are blue, gray, and yellow.

Considering this limited color palette, it's interesting to observe how dogs react to different colors in daily life. Owners can check their dogs' toys and notice preferences for specific colors. For instance, throwing a red ball in the yard may pose a challenge for a dog to locate, as red is not a prominent color in their visual spectrum. Experimenting with wearing different-colored clothes or selecting products, such as leashes and toys, in hues visible to dogs can reveal their color preferences.
